Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the largest division of the Opp Police Department. The Patrol Officers respond to calls and enforce traffic laws and city ordinance inside the City Limits of Opp. The types of calls that officers answer include criminal activity, traffic accidents, directing school traffic, unlocking locked vehicles, and all types of assistance to the citizens of Opp

Narcotics

Sgt. Kevin Wise serves as the Narcotics Investigator with the Opp Police Department. His responsibilities include investigating illegal drug activity such as sales, possession, and unlawful use, as well as violent crimes connected to narcotics within the City Limits as well as assisting other narcotics investigators within Covington County. Beyond enforcement, Sgt. Wise is active in community outreach, speaking to groups about the dangers of drug abuse and encouraging prevention efforts.

The community plays an important role in supporting these efforts by sharing information and reaching out for assistance when drug-related concerns arise.

Criminal Investigation 

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for the investigation of criminal offenses. It functions to provide investigation, analytical, and crime victim services to the residents of Opp that maximize high quality, efficiency, and the coordination with the criminal justice system. All efforts focus on promoting the safety of the community and its residents.

Communications

Communications handles emergency and non-emergency calls for service, dispatches police units to calls, maintains the dispatch log, is responsible for providing officers with information obtained from National Crime Information Center, monitors radio contact with officers in the field, and handles after hours and weekend utility calls. Opp Police Communication is the nerve center andlife line of the Police Department and each dispatcher plays a vital part in the overall mission of the Department. Dispatching can be very stressful at times

If an Accident occurs inside the City Limits of Opp the Accident Report can be purchased at the Opp Police Department at a price of $10.00 and can be picked up 8-5 Monday thru Friday.

Incident/Offense Reports can be picked up from the Opp Police Department between the hours of 8-5 Monday thru Friday.

These services are available for $15.00. Please call the Police Department for specific information regarding these services.

Applicant must provide the following:

High School Diploma or GED Certificate

A Valid Alabama driver license

Must be at least 21 years of age

Must be a citizen of the United States.

Applicant cannot have any felony convictions n any State, be under indictment, or have a pending case (NOTE: a pardon does not nullify a conviction)

Applicant cannot have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence or moral turpitude, or have a pending case regarding such.

Applicant who has been a member of the Armed Forces of the United States must provide proof of honorable discharge (i.e. DD Form 214)

Applicant shall be a person of good moral character and reputation. A background investigation will be conducted.

Applicant will be required to pass a physical agility/ability examination

Applicant shall be certified by a licensed physician designated by the City of Opp Human Resources Director.

Applicant must attend and graduate from an approved in-state Police Academy after initial hire to continue employment as a Police Officer.
