A Message from the Mayor
Dear Fellow Citizens,
This will be a first in a series of letter in which I plan to use this forum as a means to keep in contact with each and every one of my fellow citizens. I will keep you informed of events and progress made in our city. I will also tell you when things aren’t going as good as we planned and what we are working on to correct it. Open council meetings has long been the policy in Opp, with very little attendance. I want to change this and let citizens know this is their meeting, where their future and the city’s future is planned. Please come and be a part of the proceedings.
Thanksgiving is behind us and we are now caught up in the flurry of Christmas activities. As we face the onslaught of shopping, cooking, wrapping presents and attending parties I am reminded to give thanks for all of life’s rich blessings, not only at the holiday season, but the entire year. I am fortunate to live in a city that just elected me as their first female mayor and I covet your prayers and understanding as I plunge into the workings of this community.
2016 will be remembered for many things; mild winter weather, scorching summer heat, a sluggish recovery in the economy, soaring/declining fuel prices and an election overload that left us all with a sense of “will this ever end”? These things are left behind and we rush forward to tackle the many problems and opportunities which we are faced with.
Opp has a team of your elected officials, city staff and development partners that are focusing on delivering quality service and cultivating creative growth, while taking care of the business and manufacturing we already have in our city. We understand the old saying “dance with the fella that brought you”, and our commitment to the older, established and sometimes floundering businesses will not waver. They are our bread and butter. They should be our first commitment, while we search for other commerce and trade to take their new roles in the municipality, we will continue to take care of our own.
The first planned holiday event will be our downtown Christmas parade this Friday, December 2 beginning at 6 p.m. Our theme is ”Patriotic Service” and this is certainly the time of year to recognize those folks which stand in the gap; all branches of the military, the police, the fireman, EMS, along with all first responders. These individuals run toward danger, while everybody else is running away.
The council and I also want to recognize another fine bunch of young ladies at our Monday evening Dec. 5 meeting - our very own 3A championship cheerleading squad. All the ladies and sponsors will be on hand to receive special thanks for the recognition they have brought to Opp.
I hope to see and visit with many of you during our planned Christmas holidays. Celebrate the wonderous season with friends and family and celebrate Opp’s success.
Look out 2017 – here we come.
